James Andrew

James Andrew is a self-taught photographer based in Calgary, Alberta, who photographs the aurora, storm light, and lakes of the Canadian Rockies and the Alberta prairie. He worked as an electrician before picking up a camera in 2018 to document his young daughter, and spent the following three years developing his craft before turning to photography full-time. An early trip stands behind much of the work that followed: after a fellow photographer texted that the aurora might appear, Andrew drove two hours to Peyto Lake in -30°C cold and saw the northern lights for the first time in his life. That night produced Aurora over Peyto Lake. Other images include Uprising, made at Abraham Lake, and Endure, a weathered barn on the prairie under a retreating storm. His work has been shown in three exhibitions in Calgary, including a ten-piece solo presentation in a downtown office building.
