Pindar Van Arman
Pindar Van Arman is an American artist and roboticist based in Washington, D.C. He builds and codes robots that paint, using artificial intelligence, robotic arms and 3D printing, and his work addresses the differences between human and computational creativity. He began building painting robots after competing in the DARPA Grand Challenge, completing his first robotic system in 2005 and continuing for more than two decades since, through machines including bitPaintr and CloudPainter. The robots usually paint with a brush on stretched canvas, and have recently concentrated on portraiture. Van Arman took first place in the 2018 RobotArt International Competition, and his work has entered the permanent collection of LACMA. He co-runs the AI-art platform Sovrn, through which he released the on-chain collections byteGANs in 2023 and Reflection in 2024.
