About this series

Residual Notes is a public canvas generated from written contributions stored on the ethereum blockchain. Participants contribute notes that become part of a shared visual surface that continously transforms over time. Rather than presenting every contribution as a clean and isolated statement, the work merges them together on the canvas to occupy the same space where they overlap, erode and partially obscure one another until readability starts to dissolve. Language shifts away from direct communication and becomes texture and collective presence. Unlike social platforms that rank and amplify content through engagement-driven algorithms, every contribution enters the work under the same conditions. The work weakens authorship over time, shifting attention away from who said something and back towards the existence of expression itself. In this sense the canvas behaves closer to graffiti in public spaces; a surface where many people leave evidence of themselves at once. The resulting composition exist as both a document and painting generated through collective interaction. Blockchain technology is used here less as a financial system and more as civic infrastructure. The permanence and public accessibility of decentralized storage allows the work to exist outside the control of a single platform, corporation, or government entity. Every contribution remains embedded at the transaction layer, even when visually obscured over time. The permanence of the medium introduces both freedom and responsibility; participation carries weight precisely because it cannot easily disappear. At the same time, this is not a neutral public utility but an artwork with an author. Participation is open, yet a small degree of stewardship remains. The artist reserves the right to remove notes that are racist, illegal, or otherwise harmful, acknowledging that even within a permanent public record, freedom carries responsibilities. Residual Notes is ultimately optimistic. It proposes that communication can still function as a shared social act rather than a competition for visibility. The work does not attempt to eliminate conflict, difference, or disagreement, but instead asks what happens when expression is allowed to accumulate without algorithmic hierarchy dictating whose voice deserves to remain at the center.
