"Cogito, ergo sum" is the "first principle" of René Descartes' philosophy. He originally published it in French as "je pense, donc je suis" in his 1637 Discourse on the Method. "I think, therefore I am". Descartes arrived at this through radical doubt, stripping everything away until the one thing he couldn't question was the act of questioning itself.
