During a recent interview about my photography I explained that loneliness that has become a recurring theme for me. It's not always immediately apparent in every image but it's always there, maybe just under the waterline or in a shadow, and taken as body of work it becomes more obvious. I've written many times about how, to me, Tokyo is a goldmine of beautiful loneliness. Millions of people crammed together, perfectly avoiding each other, it's almost tangible. I just returned from Shibuya last week and made this photo while I was there, out one morning before the sun came up when the streets are almost empty. It was a quintessential Tokyo morning, cold, dark, quiet, the few people who are around, living in their own little world, oblivious to everything around them. And me walking around, living in mine as well.
